**📅 Date:** ➤ ⌈ [[2025-08-10-Sun〚Golden Barhi Dates ▪Coffee recipe - Soul Awaking 〛]]⌋
**💭 What:**
➤ Spotted Golden Barhi dates in the supermarket — curiosity ... Took them home for a taste test… > Pretty sure the Golden Barhi I had today wasn’t fully ripe yet .... #👾/Comment
➤ **Origin:** Iraq (Basra region) — now also grown in Middle East, North Africa, and California.
**👀 Snap:**
➤ #👾/Comment I can’t help but wonder — if someone grows up eating different kinds of fruit, does that shape how their brain develops? Some fruits are naturally sweeter, others more tart. What if you lived in a very cold place where sugary fruit was rare — would your brain process taste differently over time? Since flavor signals travel straight to the brain and involve our neurons, could lifelong habits of eating certain flavors or natural foods subtly rewire our taste perception… or even influence how we think? 🍒🧠 [^1]

## **🍯 Golden Barhi Dates — Fact Notes**
**Key difference:**
![[IMG_3649.jpg|300]]
- Most dates you see in supermarkets (like **Medjool**, **Deglet Noor**) are in the **Tamar** stage — fully ripened, dried naturally on the tree, dark brown, very sweet, long shelf life.
- **Golden Barhi** is harvested **earlier** — usually eaten at the **Khalal** (crisp, golden) or **Rutab** (soft, honey-brown) stage — so it’s **fresh, seasonal, perishable** and has a very different taste/texture.
- **Botanical Name:** _Phoenix dactylifera_ (Barhi variety)
- **Origin:** Iraq (Basra region) — now also grown in Middle East, North Africa, and California.
- **Name Meaning:** “Barhi” (برحي) — from Arabic, meaning _hot wind_ (ripens in peak summer).
- **Appearance:** Small, round, golden-yellow skin.
- **Ripening Stages:**
- **Khalal:** Crisp, firm, mildly sweet, slightly astringent.
- **Rutab:** Soft, caramel-like sweetness.
- **Tamar:** Fully dried, very sweet.
- **Season:** Short — usually late summer to early autumn.
- **Taste Notes:** Honey, butterscotch, mild cinnamon.
- **Shelf Life:** Fresh stage — 1–2 weeks refrigerated.
