Safe/Stretch/Danger is a way of placing ourselves along a continuum of emotional, technical, and interpersonal challenge in order to maximize our own growth. When we're in **Safe**, we've done this thing a million times and we know exactly how to do it. We're in comfort when we're brushing our teeth or washing the dishes. Comfort feels very safe and there is no perceived risk or threat for us. When we're in **Stretch**, we're doing something we don't quite know how to do. We're stretching into something new, and there is potentially some [[Perceived threat]] in what we're doing, but we're able to bravely [[Run at the problem]] - this is where [[Growth]] comes from! When we're in **Danger**, there is too much [[Perceived threat]] to us to effectively learn. We get amygdala highjacked (see [[The biology of anxiety]]) and we aren't able to stay in a relaxed and curious state. ![](safe-stretch-danger.png) See also: [[Growth edge]]
