# Lab Tip - Beakers - For a Few Dollars More As home chemists we try to "make do with what ya' got". There is nothing wrong with buying a used hot plate, using a gallon jug in place of a flask, and such. Regarding the beakers however, spend an extra money for good quality glassware. The brand name(s) to be shopping for is "Pryex", or cheaper "Kinnex"/Chinese. It's also advertised as "Boro" (for borosilicate). Borosilicate glass is stronger and can normally withstand temperature changes from 'say' boiling to being submerged in an ice bath. It's not worth spilling the lab all over your desk in the final stage of your lab because "you tried to go cheap". Spend the extra $5 (or so) with the beakers. ![](https://i.imgur.com/LqiIvpH.png) Look for the word "Boro"
