# TMI Introspective Awareness
TMI Introspective Awareness is awareness of the mind's own activity, condition, and quality during meditation.
## Meaning
In TMI, introspective awareness lets the meditator know what the mind is doing while attention stays with the meditation object.
At early stages, it appears as the moment of waking up from mind-wandering.
Later, it becomes continuous enough to detect distraction and dullness before they take over.
In more mature practice, it becomes metacognitive: the mind knows its own state while attending.
## Source Of Meaning
This note is grounded in The Mind Illuminated Ten Stages overview and stage instructions for mind-wandering, forgetting, distraction, dullness, and metacognitive awareness, especially PDF pp. 42-48, 136-150, 183-191, and 239-263.
## Relationship Over Time
This meaning should help Joe distinguish self-observation from self-criticism.

## Tensions
Introspective awareness can become judgment if Joe uses it to criticize the mind.
In TMI, noticing is reinforced with appreciation because waking up is the training event.
## Question
Can the mind notice itself without turning the noticing into blame?
