- Title:: Understanding knowledge management practices for early design activity and its implications for reuse - Author(s):: [[Moushumi Sharmin]] - Abstract:: Prior knowledge is a critical resource for design, especially when designers are striving to generate new ideas for complex problems. Systems that improve access to relevant prior knowledge and promote reuse can improve design efficiency and outcomes. Unfortunately, such systems have not been widely adopted indicating that user needs in this area have not been adequately understood. In this paper, we report the results of a contextual inquiry into the practices of and attitudes toward knowledge management and reuse during early design. The study consisted of interviews and surveys with professional designers in the creative domains. A novel aspect of our work is the focus on early design, which differs from but complements prior works’ focus on knowledge reuse during later design and implementation phases. Our study yielded new findings and implications that, if applied, will help bring the benefits of knowledge management systems and reuse into early design activity. - Type:: [[Conference paper]] - Publication:: - URL : https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/1518701.1519064 - Date Added:: [[December 28th, 2021]] - Zotero links:: [Local library](zotero://select/groups/2451508/items/8FZXGMXP), [Local library](https://www.zotero.org/groups/2451508/items/8FZXGMXP) - PDF links : [Sharmin et al. - 2009 - Understanding knowledge management practices for e.pdf](zotero://open-pdf/groups/2451508/items/NIIHNUEQ) ###### Discourse Context - **Informs::** [[QUE - How can we best bridge private vs. public knowledge]] - **Informs::** [[QUE - Under what conditions do diverse initial examples lead to better final design solutions]] - **Informs::** [[THE - interaction-oriented theory of creative inspiration from examples]] - **SourceFor::** [[EVD - professional designers curated examples to understand trends and design approaches to inform .... simple direct transfer of solution approaches - @sharminUnderstandingKnowledgeManagement2009b]] - **SourceFor::** [[EVD - professional designers were highly motivated to and often did share and retrieve ideas and ex...document ideas in shared repositories and wikis - @sharminUnderstandingKnowledgeManagement2009b]] - **SourceFor::** [[EVD - professional designers lacked robust and consistent organization and metadata for ideas and examples, which hampered reuse - @sharminUnderstandingKnowledgeManagement2009b]]
