The JA Ranch is the oldest ranch in the Texas Panhandle. Founded in 1876 by a partnership between an Englishman, John Adair, his American wife, Cornelia Adair, and an experienced cattle rancher, Charles Goodnight, it operates today under unbroken possession by the Adair family. Goodnight’s life is a fixture of western lore. This project looks elsewhere: at the men and women who worked the ranch. Where they came from. What they did. Whom they knew. Where they went when they left. Follow those lives closely and the familiar plot of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries comes into focus—post–Civil War migration, westward movement, gold rushes, war, boom and bust. Taken one by one, the stories are inspiring and brutal, often both. People outlasted weather and debt. They buried children and spouses far too soon. They did it without the medicine, surgery, or mental-health care we now treat as ordinary, and their stamina still startles. Historians call this kind of work prosopography: a collective study of a defined group, invested less in famous biographies than in shared backgrounds, ties, and patterns. Many of these people left only faint traces. A few left loud ones. The point is the web between them, not a gallery of notables. Each entry on this site follows a template to trace public and civic roles, ties to other JA people, family origins outside Texas, and questions still open. New detail is added as it turns up. Those lives become nodes in a graph of how the ranch’s people were connected. You can read the biographies one at a time, or move through the data by relationship, place, and date. This is unfinished work. Some pages are still little more than notes. I am sharing it so other researchers can use it—and so they can correct and enlarge it. New names appear as new links to the ranch come into view.
