The title _Mishkat al-Masabih_ (مشكاة المصابيح) "The Niche of Lamps". The word _mishkat_ refers to a niche or a recess in a wall, often used to hold a lamp and reflect the light back out, symbolising the spreading of light or knowledge. _Masabiḥ_ means “lamps” i.e. religious knowledge. It was compiled by [[(741 AH) Khāṭīb al-Tibrīzi]] and consists of around 5,945 hadith. It is an expansion of a collection by Imam [[(516 AH) Baghawī]] called Maṣābīḥ al-Sunnah.
