Vertical Takeoff Or Landing. An aircraft that is somewhere between an airplane and a helicopter. Often using two to four lifting engines, either jet or turboprop. They can transition from vertical to level flight and achieve much higher speeds than a helicopter. In many cases, they can fly like a traditional fixed-wing aircraft in horizontal flight.
