(Laser-Phased Array Defense System) These are one of the newest and most niche systems added to modern spacecraft. In conjunction with shortwave “clutter” radar systems (aka CX-Band 10-14.5 GHz), they are capable of detecting tiny objects, such as space debris and small kinetic projectiles. Phased array laser systems lack in power and range, but are able to rapidly shift between hundreds of smaller targets. Thus making them applicable to offensive [[PACS]] munitions, missile fragments, space debris and micrometeorites. They can’t outright vaporize these fragments, but they can heat them up enough to cause outgassing, altering their course or reducing their effectiveness. Their effective range is only ~5-10 kilometers and have a minimum range of around 500m to 1km depending on the target mass and velocity. As such, they are last-ditch defense systems. Close proximity missile detonations are well inside their range, so their effectiveness against anti-ship missiles is minimal.
