The amount of [[Artikybahl Device|Artikybahl Devices]] has been finite since at least the [[Ceaseless Fray]]
The majority of these devices are installed in Transit Rings. These are located at the [[L2]] point near most habitable planets (one per system at most).
Many new rings use Artikybahl Devices scavenged from old abandoned rings within the bounds of the [[Stellar Decay]]. The [[ICL]] and later [[EBRIS]] were responsible for the majority of early expeditionary missions to recover them.
Transit Rings are all very similar at about 1 kilometer in diameter. More than adequate for the largest of human ships to pass through.
The rings also double as communication nodes for the [[HubComm]] network.
Portals can be opened as often as 30 minutes for normal operation and remain open for about 5 minutes. These durations can be extended if needed.

>So far, ground-based portals haven’t been made stable, and their event horizons are imperfect. This has made research into such, very dangerous.

>They suffer the same issue as [[Transit|transits]] deep within the galactic core. *[[Gravitational Noise]]* complicates [[Navigational Mathematics]] and reduces the efficacy of portal containment (via the *event horizon*). Ordinary planetary gravity is considerably higher than anywhere in space.
>
>It is rumored that [[Nordmauer Industries]] has been attempting to improve these portals.
