A projectile weapon that uses electromagnets to hurl a projectile forward. Modern coilguns in Imperium have several advantages and disadvantages. - They are virtually silent. Which makes them ideal for clandestine operations. - They can fire makeshift ammunition. While this negates the aerodynamic stabilization of their mass produced projectiles, any piece of metal that fits into the magazine can be launched from the weapon. - They are heavy. With a bank of capacitors and electromagnetic coils running down the length of the barrel, and a large battery to power the weapon, they are half again heavier than standard weapons in the same class. - Even with aerodynamic stabilization, the projectiles will tumble after a few tens of meters, reducing their ability to penetrate armor. - Their muzzle velocity is subsonic. Which makes them even harder to detect by sound, but the kinetic energy is much lower than a similar class of standard weapon. Use cases: - When stealth takes priority over range or damage. - They can be loaded with [[HET Safety Round|HET Safety Rounds]] or [[HET Safety Round|Splat Rounds]] for urban and hostage rescue situations. - Close quarters combat. - Onboard spacecraft or aircraft. ![[Coilgun.jpeg]]
