# Fuel Mix
Below are definitions of the different fuel mixture methods employed in lampworking torches.
![[4 - Definitions#Pre-Mix Torch]]
These flames work best for small, detailed work. The velocity of this flame type can make working more difficult with some colors prone to boiling/burning. Pre-mix torches can be very loud and cause 'POP' sounds. [[4 - Definitions#Flashback|Flashback]] is a greater risk with pre-mix torches. Pre-mix torch flames are typically used in hand torches, Top-mount torches for the Nortel Major/minor and in the center fire or the Carlisle CC series.
![[4 - Definitions#Surface Mix Torch]]
Surface mixing is the most commonly used method in torch design. These flames which work well for [[4 - Definitions#Borosilicate Glass|borosilicate]] or [[4 - Definitions#Soda-lime Glass|soda-lime]] glass. They are often more quiet compared to others. Most GTT torches use a controllable secondary injection of oxygen into the fuel. Moving forward this will be referred to as 'Triple Surface Mix'. This method gives added control to flame chemistry and composition at the expense of added complexity and cost.
# One Or More Stages
Multiple stages give a torch wider range between small and large flames. Most torches have a set of manual fuel and oxygen valves for each stage. Herbert Arnold Zenit models allow for transitions between stages and flame size with a single knob. Single stage torches tend to be the most simple and thus cheapest options. These torches are best for small work. Additional stages increase flame size, oxygen consumption, and work size. Some torches provide individual barbs/connections for each stage. This can be useful as it allows you to connect each stage to a difference source of oxygen. (Centerfire to concentrator, Outerfire to tank oxy.)
