- Before writing about hijabs, write about high heels.
- It should be a woman's choice to wear them.
- Simultaneously, it should be perfectly acceptable for men to wear them too.
- But then consider the evidence of high heels.
- Meant to artificially enhance a woman's appearance, which is a type of lie.
- They cause physical discomfort and even chronic musculoskeletal disorders.
- They reduce their mobility and balance.
- High heels are, compared to sensible shoes, a clearly sexist [[Social Norm]].
- And the evidence is overwhelming that much if not most of what people find safe, comfortable, and pleasurable is founded on social norms.
- So when a woman "chooses" to wear high heels, is it really her choice, or is it just the result of decades of indoctrination in a patriarchal society?
- I believe it's the latter.
- And that's why, at the risk of being labelled a sexist pig, I encourage women to NOT wear high heels.
- However, I can also empathize with women who choose to wear them.
- I do this be thinking about the consequences if I, a male, started wearing them.
- Discomfort; lack of respect from students and possibly even peers, causing social unease; and so on.
- This is what happens when you try to change society too fast.
- The system can only change up to a certain rate.
- The main reason for this is that an individual's beliefs need to update to bring about a change in behaviour.
- A change in environment forcing a change of behaviours is not enough.
- So what can I do?
- Write and talk about these issues as much as possible to help people get used to the idea and help expedite change where it matters most - in the mind.
- Oppose vigorously the continued normalization of the old ways.
- That is, anyone who says, "females must dress like women" is going to get an earful from me.
