**See Also:** [[Progressivism]]. %% #todo look for related notes to link into this one. %% - Before writing about hijabs, write about high heels. - It should be a woman's choice to wear them. - Simultaneously, it should be perfectly acceptable for men to wear them too. - But then consider the evidence of high heels. - Meant to artificially enhance a woman's appearance, which is a type of lie. - They cause physical discomfort and even chronic musculoskeletal disorders. - They reduce their mobility and balance. - High heels are, compared to sensible shoes, a clearly sexist [[Social Norm]]. - And the evidence is overwhelming that much if not most of what people find safe, comfortable, and pleasurable is founded on social norms. - So when a woman "chooses" to wear high heels, is it really her choice, or is it just the result of decades of indoctrination in a patriarchal society? - I believe it's the latter. - And that's why, at the risk of being labelled a sexist pig, I encourage women to NOT wear high heels. - However, I can also empathize with women who choose to wear them. - I do this be thinking about the consequences if I, a male, started wearing them. - Discomfort; lack of respect from students and possibly even peers, causing social unease; and so on. - This is what happens when you try to change society too fast. - The system can only change up to a certain rate. - The main reason for this is that an individual's beliefs need to update to bring about a change in behaviour. - A change in environment forcing a change of behaviours is not enough. - So what can I do? - Write and talk about these issues as much as possible to help people get used to the idea and help expedite change where it matters most - in the mind. - Oppose vigorously the continued normalization of the old ways. - That is, anyone who says, "females must dress like women" is going to get an earful from me. %% Notes to absorb ```dataview list from [[]] and "CPB" and !"Templates" and !outgoing([[]]) sort file.name asc ``` %%
