Systems Thinking examines the interactions and interdependencies of factors in complex systems in the search for higher levels of output or performance. Systems thinking is in contrast to the human tendency to deal with complexity by breaking things down into their component parts. System thinking seeks "global optimization" of the entire system, rather than "local optimization" of individual subsystems or components. A popular book addressing systems thinking is [Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/255127.The_Fifth_Discipline). [[Essential Dynamics]] is an example of Systems Thinking.
