# 20230813 ☕️ Sunday Morning Coffee Notes
Three `random notes` from my Obsidian vault, today's `music` selection from MailTape, and a `photo` from the past week from my phone.

## 📸 "Memex Bell Time"

#photo #memex
The past week has been a `staycation`, and much of my time has been spent going thru boxes in the basement, with an aim towards reducing the number of boxes (aka downsizing).
To the right, you can see the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner that has made it very easy to transform sheets of paper and ink molecules into searchable digital electrons. It takes about a minute to turn an article into a pdf file, another minute or two to add some metadata to enhance findability and future usefulness. I have digitized over 300 files in the past week, and recycled 8 boxes of paper.
This is part of my (seemingly lifelong) project to create a digital archive of, well, nearly everything useful. Much like [Vannevar Bush](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vannevar_Bush) has described as the `Memex` and [[Gordon Bell]] has realized with his [MyLifeBits](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyLifeBits), mine is the `Memex Bell project`. I expect it to be a source of writing and other creative projects when I retire to part-time work.

## ![[Open random note.png]]
Three notes from the Random Note core plugin. This is how I am dipping my toe into [Obsidian Publish](https://publish.obsidian.md) by adding at least 3 notes per week from my library of 6000+ notes.

## 🎲 [[q-FG79]] Notebook (1979)
So far, #FG79 is the oldest of the 47 #notebooks I have.
![[FG79 Notebook images.png]]
The images are the pages from a pocket notebook from about 1979. Even back then (high school days), I often carried a small 3x5 notebook to write down ideas, facts, lists, or whatever. The transcribed notes are linked in the title. I have a number of story ideas that I had been thinking about. From the nature of the ideas, I am guessing that I had recently read _Brave New World_. The first page has "Story Ideas" under the heading _Biological/Medical Technology of the future_, including:
- a supermarket of live organs to shop from (eg, "gently used kidney")
- zygote banks selected for popular characteristics
- genetically-engineered pets
- "subliminal messaging" on TV to make people feel free and independent (when they are neither)
- artificial "meat" made from vegetable protein
The story about the Big Bang on [[FG79-006.png|pg06]] I did actually later write as a short story for a college creative writing class.

## 🎲 [[Audiobook - The Small Big]] (2014)
These are notes I took listening to this book from Steve Martin (not THAT one). It has lots of #GTD type tips and strategies for increasing motivation, making commitments. Behavioral hacks, if you will. (I only have notes from 2 chapters, not sure why, though I could not even recall I ever bought this Audible title -- clearly, this is an aspirational book for me ;-)

## 🎲 [[PsychNews20081003.Moran.Psych blogs|Psychiatrists Find Home in the Blogosphere (Psych News)]] (2008)
This is an article by [[Mark Moran]] from _Psychiatric News_, the news magazine from the APA, talking about psychiatrists who blog about the field. This is 2008, mind you, when the author had to define what a `blog` is. He quotes me (writing anonymously as Roy) and other bloggers about some of the issues facing physicians who blog at that time. The big thing then was the concern over liability. I asked my own malpractice carrier at the time, and they said that they would not cover any issues arising from blogging, mostly because it was new and there had been no liability cases yet involving blogging. So, my two co-bloggers/co-podcasters did not use our full names at that time.
> “It is devoted to everyday issues in psychiatry, ranging from private practice to forensics to general-hospital psychiatry" —what Roy, who asked to remain anonymous for the purposes of this article, called the nuts and bolts of practicing psychiatry. The psychiatric threesome also produces a #podcast called _My Three Shrinks_.
{note: this unfortunate phrase -- `psychiatric threesome` -- is a [GoogleWhack](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googlewhack) even now, 15 years later}
