Non-duality is a brain state described by many contemplative traditions, primarily reached through devotional and meditative practice. [Non-definitively](https://sashachapin.substack.com/p/a-non-definitive-non-guide-to-non), it begins with the recognition that the boundary between our conscious narrative and observable phenomena is artificial. Meditation is one means of partially or completely dissolving this boundary, however many report to experience a similar state under the influence of psychedelics, and it is a characteristic of psychological [[flow]] states.
Duality is the default state of waking [[Consciousness]]. [[The self]] is contained within the [[body]] and classified as "me" and everything beyond it as "not me." This the universal [[personal subjective continuity]] experienced by most people. The "not me" inhabits the contents of consciousness. "Not me" objects are potential threats to the "me." Certain activities and practices will remove this boundary. It is the entrance into a flow state and the notion of "losing oneself" that indicates a non-dual experience.
However, this experience of loss of self is merely an entry point into dissolving all binary concepts as a whole:
- Yin-yang
- Good-evil
- Native-invasive (botanical non-duality!!!)
- Order-chaos
- Etc.
In [[a general theory of meditation]], this state of consciousness is the primary mode in which prior [[Belief|beliefs]] are deconstructed and mental contents reorganized. Psychologically, this may be thought of as severing the links on [[the network self]]. Most practitioners agree that perpetually living within such a state is not evolutionarily viable. Rather, the practice seems to be to allow the self access to [[generic subjective continuity]], then allowing daily life to reconnect the severed dimensions of self as necessary.
