Mist Magic (Evocation) (Water, Air)
Level: 2
Range: 70 yds.
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 2
Duration: 1d4 turns + 1 rd./level
Area of Effect: 20 ft. + 10 ft./level radius
Saving Throw: None
This spell creates concealing mists, akin to the 1st-level wizard spell [[Wall of Fog]]. Unlike that simpler spell, mist magic can, as chosen by the caster, either move at a maximum rate of 20 feet per round, stay motionless despite winds for 1 round per level of the caster, or move with the caster (being left behind at the caster’s last location if the caster uses such spells as [[Blink]], [[Dimension Door]], or [[Spells/Magic User/5th Level MU/Teleport|Teleport]]). The movement cannot be changed once chosen. The duration of the mists is halved by strong winds.
The mist created is thick and concealing, obscuring even infravision beyond a 2-foot distance. The mist is also extremely wet, dousing normal campfires or smaller flames and extinguishing larger normal fires in 2—5 rounds (this also destroys the mist). Many wizards use this spell to put out house and forest fires.
All fire-based attacks entering, passing through, or cast within the mists lose 2 points from each die of damage. Items in the mist requiring saving throws against fire-based attacks receive a +3 saving throw bonus. The mists can be affected by [[Hold Vapor]] and destroyed by [[Spells/Magic User/3rd Level MU/Dispel Magic|Dispel Magic]].
Notes: Uncommon for Water, Air, and Weather mages; otherwise rare. Originally from the FORGOTTEN REALMS setting
