Silver was a precious metal that was used all across Toril for a vast variety of purposes. # Properties Shapechangers (most notably lycanthropes) were vulnerable to silver. Vampires, devils, wraiths, and wights were also vulnerable to silver. Wizards from Aglarond never wore silver and were rumored to be vulnerable to silver # Applications Silver was widely used in currency, weapons, armor, jewelry and magical items. It was sought after for its purity and beauty. This created ample opportunities to acquire wealth through the extraction and trade of silver, as was the case for many silver mine magnates, such as Sardamon Thorland. # Currency Silver was commonly used in the form of coins all across the realm. The shape, size, and value of these coins varied depending on the time and place that they were from. # Weapons and Armor To create a silver weapon, the silver was often bonded to a steel weapon. This was a complicated process combining both alchemy and metallurgy known as alchemical silvering; this form of silver was known as alchemical silver and such a weapon was said to be "silvered". It could not be performed with non-metal items, nor with exotic metals like adamantine, cold iron, and mithral. However, while a silvered weapon would harm lycanthropes and other creatures vulnerable to silver, it was more fragile and a little less injurious. Silvering also cost extra, from an additional 2 gp for a projectile, 20 gp for a small weapon, 90 gp for a one-handed weapon, and 180 gp for a two-handed weapon. Temporary silvering could be applied for an hour with a vial of silversheen. The soldiers who protected the High Palace of Silverymoon wore suits of silver plate mail. # Magic Items Silver was often used in the production of items that related to light and moon magic. During the Shoon Imperium, pure silver was used in the crafting of magic rings that enhanced the wearer's spellcasting ability. # Treatment Maintaining the shine on silver required polishing with a non-abrasive cloth. Scalewater Carp were known to be particularly good at polishing silver with their mouths. These rare fish could only be found in one pond, called Scalewater, on the southern edge of the Thunder Peaks. # Enchanting If treated magically, silver weighed as much as steel. Magically treated silver also gained a level of resistance to electricity.[ # History Following the conquest of Maztica by Amn in the Year of the Helm, 1362 DR, treasures of the shattered Maztican Empire were melted into bars and transported back to Faerûn as trade ingots. By the Year of Wild Magic, 1372 DR, Maztican silver ingots were commonly encountered along the Sword Coast and the Nelanther Island # Volo's Guide Silver: This relatively common valuable pure metal is known to the elves as "the sheath and shield of Art" because, of all metals, it is the most associated with and suitable for magic. Some Faerunians believe silver is the hardened tears of the goddess Selune, and in the eldest dwarven tongues, the names for silver meant "the blood of alloys," referring to its versatility in making one metal combine with another. Many dwarves use silver in various alloy formulae of their own devising —or that have been handed down through clans for generations. Most of the beauty of metalwork down through the ages has been associated with the gleam and hue of mirror-polished, untarnished silver, and it has always been associated with the adornment of magical items. Enchanted items that involve moon-related magics, electricity or lightning, and pure energy discharges (such as magic missiles) will always automatically make all saving throws related to [[Awakening]], [[Enchant an Item]], [[Holy Vesting]], [[Wondrous Web]],v[[Merald's Meld]], [[Crown Meld]], [[Obar's Lesser Purification]], [[Azundel's Purification]], [[Higher Consecration]], and any other purification spells cast upon them if silver is their dominant ingredient (60% or greater composition by mass). If the silver content of an item is between 50% and 60%, the metal instead confers a +4 bonus on all such saving throws. On other sorts of magical items, silver confers only one benefit: Silver content of 50% or greater gives a +2 bonus to all rolls asso¬ ciated with the success of purification, strengthening, and meld¬ ing spells. Certain elven folk, and many senior Harpers, are known to command secret processes that exploit other magical benefits of silver. Dwarves are known to be able to combine it with mithral to make several lightning-warding alloys, so that a warrior clad in full plate armor made of such alloys can take the lightning strikes of a furious storm without harm and fight on. Items made primarily of silver make all item saving throws at the normal listings for metal.
