**Abbathor** (pronounced: _ÆB-ba-thor_ was the [neutral evil](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Neutral_evil "Neutral evil") [dwarven](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Dwarven_pantheon "Dwarven pantheon") [god](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/God "God") of greed and for a time in the 1400s DR an [exarch](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Exarch "Exarch") of [Bane](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Bane "Bane") The **Great Master of Greed** represented the major weakness of dwarvenkind, the treasurelust that was their worst aspect. The **Trove Lord** was once concerned with the natural beauty of gems, but after being denied the position he had coveted since birth, he abandoned dwarven honor for trickery and would do whatever it took to never be denied again.
“
A little act of selfishness now and then is to be expected even from the wisest of folk.

## Description[](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Abbathor?veaction=edit§ion=1 "Edit section: Description")
Despite his great height (by dwarven standards) appearing as a 6 feet (1.8 meters) or 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall dwarf, Abbathor was a fat, squat, and hunched figure. He seemed to slither and slide as he walked and was often rubbing his hands together, though never made much noise. He covered his sallow skin in leather armor and furs, both fashioned from the skins of that which died opposing him.
Abbathor's [piggy](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Pig "Pig") eyes were said to be yellow-green, burning yellow when he was eager for or claiming treasure while hooded and green when scheming for it or thwarted in his attempt to get it. His nose was sharp and hooked like that of a [giant eagle](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Giant_eagle "Giant eagle") and it was said his voice was wheedling, harsh and husky.
## Personality[](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Abbathor?veaction=edit§ion=2 "Edit section: Personality")
Abbathor was an intensely greedy deity, desiring valuables to a degree best described as sensual. He unconsciously carressed any gold or gems he was carrying, seemingly overwhelmed by the sensation, and was envious of others' riches, unable to control himself at the sight of a particularly expensive item and willingly to steal or slay for it on the spot. He believed in the acquisition of all forms of wealth by any and all means necessary.
## Realm[](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Abbathor?veaction=edit§ion=3 "Edit section: Realm")
_Main article: [Glitterhell](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Glitterhell "Glitterhell")_
Glitterhell, Abbathor’s domain, earned its name from the veins of gold that gleamed defiantly within the gloom of Hades’ first layer. This lair took the form of a sprawling cavern complex, buried deep beneath the gray and dismal terrain. Rumors whispered that in its deepest reaches lay a planar layer barrier connecting to [Niflheim](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Niflheim "Niflheim")—a treasure, if true, the god of avaricious dwarves kept jealously hidden.
It was Abbathor’s insatiable greed and cunning that protected him from the soul-draining essence of the Hades plane, which wore down even other divine powers. Ever restless, he eluded pursuit and envy by planting decoy lairs and misleading trails. The true location of Glitterhell remained a secret, veiled behind layers of lies and traps, beyond the reach of those—dwarves or mortals—whose own hunger for gold might drive them to seek it.

Abbathor's priests dressed in red [leather armor](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Leather_armor "Leather armor") and leather caps They shared Abbathor's stance on what wealth was to be obtained and how (namely all of it and however possible). His holy days were on the solar eclipse and he demanded the sacrifice of both blood and [gems](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Gem "Gem") annually.
## Relationships[](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Abbathor?veaction=edit§ion=5 "Edit section: Relationships")
Abbathor's relations with his fellow dwarven deities were strained, but he was not cast out of the pantheon, and he was sometimes known to conspire with [Vergadain](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Vergadain "Vergadain") on various schemes.
