# Why Bluesky? ## What is Bluesky? Bluesky is a social media app that aims to offer users control over their online presence and data. I went into a bit more detail in the ["Getting Up To Speed On Bluesky" article I wrote for *School Library Journal*](https://www.slj.com/story/getting-up-to-speed-on-bluesky-librarians-libraries--social-media). > [!NOTE] This is NOT an official Bluesky resource! > Be aware that this is a living vault, very much a work-in-progress. It is NOT meant to be a 100% accurate and finished resource. Please note that these tips are just based on my own experience. What works for me may not work for you. Feel free to send me feedback via [[Contact Debbie]] > ## Why Bluesky is Debbie's go-to social media platform right now I got tired of waiting for "the perfect" social media platform to replace Twitter/X, and of all the platforms I've investigated, Bluesky has the most tools for curating user experience. Bluesky is transparent about changes it plans to make and why. Its founder doesn't casually throw announcements about drastic changes into a social media post. We find out about updates and plans from the [Bluesky blog](https://bsky.social/about/blog) and [official Bluesky account](https://bsky.app/profile/bsky.app). Their [Bluesky Safety account](https://bsky.app/profile/safety.bsky.app) shares updates about trust and safety on the platform. They [promise not to use our content to train generative AI](https://bsky.app/profile/bsky.app/post/3layuzbto2c2x). However, there is no ONE social media platform to rule them all. When I post about Bluesky on other platforms, I sometimes get replies from people demanding that I PROVE to them that Bluesky is the best, or that their owners/founders will never turn Bad, etc etc. My attitude: No online platform is perfect. If you want to wait until a social media platform emerges that is GUARANTEED to have no problems, no issues behind-the-scenes, no problematic people associated with the running of the company, and they want me to guarantee that Bluesky will forever be the best platform etc etc....then my advice is to wait until the Perfect Platform (for them, anyway) emerges. I love this quote from [John Scalzi on Bluesky](https://bsky.app/profile/scalzi.com/post/3lbeyemq3ss2u): ![[JohnScalzi-HowLongWillBlueskyBeAwesome.jpg]] *Alt-text: "Bluesky is awesome now, for how long?" I mean, look, all things change and end, we will all die, earth will be uninhabitable in a billion years, then the sun will expand and destroy the planet, and the universe will die a slow death of proton decay. But BEFORE THAT, let's make this place fun, okay?"* ## Posts from others about why they like Bluesky ### Publications [Why I'm sick of X - and optimistic about Bluesky](https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/blue-sky-leaving-x-social-twitter-musk-rcna180359) - by Zeeshan Aleem, MSNBC [Bluesky Feels More Like The Old Twitter Than X Does](https://www.vox.com/technology/385433/what-is-bluesky-twitter-social-media-use-future) - by [Adam Clark Estes](https://bsky.app/profile/adamclarkestes.com) and [Aja Romano](https://bsky.app/profile/bookshop.bsky.social) on VOX. ### Blog posts [Bluesky: The Next Big Social Media Platform](https://il.ly/tech/bluesky) - by Ilisa Ism.
