# Translation in Bluesky
Bluesky's official app does not currently (as of 2025-08-06) have a built-in translator. Clicking on "Translate" will take you to Google Translate via the browser.
As far as I know, all automatic translation services rely on neural machine translation (NMT) under the hood. NMT is a type of AI that uses deep learning models to translate text from one language to another. If you prefer not to use AI for ethical or privacy reasons, consider asking human users for help or using offline resources. Translation features may improve in customization as the ecosystem grows. Meanwhile, I've [posted a thread on Bluesky asking the community for suggestions of non-AI translation tools](https://bsky.app/profile/debbieohi.com/post/3lvqdrtzywc2c).
But back to Bluesky's native app. Here's an example of a post as it looks in a browser on my desktop Mac:

*ALT text for above image: Screenshot of a social media post showing a black cat lying on a bicycle lane symbol, appearing as if it's riding the bike. The caption, written in French, jokes that "Chat-rlatan has begun his training for the 2026 Tour de France. He’s giving it his all!" A purple circle and arrow highlight the “Translate” button below the post.*
One of my favourite sources of Uplift feed fodder is Paolette's Bluesky feed at [@poalette.bsky.social](https://bsky.app/profile/paolette.bsky.social)!
Clicking on "Translate" above will take you to Google Translate, where you'll be given the original text as well as the translation:

If you don't want to use Google Translate, another option is 3rd party Bluesky client [GraySky](https://graysky.app/), which enables users to translate posts without leaving the app. [Upgrading to Graysky Pro](https://graysky.app/) apparently provides users with better translations via DeepL (another AI-powered translation tool).
