It employs a *short recoil* mechanism with a *tilting barrel*, a design which would become widely influential to and borrowed in many modern pistols since. The *relative simplicity* and *reliability* of its design has led to its use in service for more than a century since conception, though it was replaced by the [[Beretta 92]] as the standard U.S. military sidearm in 1985. The M1911 features two safeties; a *thumb safety* which can be actively engaged to prevent the sear and hammer from moving, and a *grip safety* which prevents the trigger from moving unless the pistol is gripped in firing position. ## Variants - *M1911A1* - shorter trigger, cutouts around the trigger in the frame, curved mainspring housing, longer grip safety spur, shorter hammer spur; all these changes were as a result of use in World War I. - *M45 MEU(SOC)* - "Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable)" - gutted and deburred frames, after-market grip safeties, ambidextrous thumb safeties, high-visibility sights, accurized barrels; only hand-selected M1911A1 were modified - *M45A1* - a new M1911 with dual recoil spring assembly, Picatinny rails, tan finish ## Video games - *Rainbow Six: Siege* - M45 MEU(SOC) - *Battlefield 1* - "M1911" - M1911 and M1911A1 hybrid - *Escape from Tarkov* - M1911A1 and M45A1 - *Payday 2* - "Crosskill Chunky Compact" - M1911 and M1911A1 hybrid - *Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas* - "9mm" - *Playerunknown's Battlegrounds* - M1911A1 - *Tomb Raider* - "Tactical Pistol" - Remington M1911 - *Mirror's Edge* - M1911A1 - *Ghost Recon series* - *Ghost Recon: Wildlands* - "M1911" - M1911A1 - *Ghost Recon: Breakpoint* - "M1911" - M1911A1 [^1]: Specification of an M1911.
