*Glock 17 Gen 5*
*Glock* is a brand of Austrian polymer-framed pistols developed to replace the Walther P.38 for the Austrian Armed Forces.
The first model was the Glock 17, so named because it was the *17th patent* of the company. It operates using a *tilting barrel* short-recoil system adapted from the Browning Hi-Power.
Several components of the Glock, including the frame and magazine body, are made from a *nylon-based polymer* developed by Gaston Glock known as *Polymer 2*. It is highly resilient and is more temperature resistant than traditional steel or alloy frames. The frame uses steel rails to guide the slide.
The polymer construction of the Glock led to a myth which states that the pistol is invisible to X-ray machines, despite the fact that 84% of the Glock by weight is steel and Polymer 2 is visible to X-ray machines.
The Glock features *two internal safeties* and an *external trigger safety* - it does not have a traditional safety lever. All safeties operate passively, automatically, and independently of each other. The external safety is a *trigger lever* located on the bottom half of the trigger which, if not pressed, contacts the frame before the trigger can be fully depressed.
The internal safeties are:
- *Firing pin safety* - a steel pin which physically blocks the firing pin unless the trigger is fully depressed.
- *Drop safety* - a moulded track in the trigger housing that guides the trigger bar and prevents it from releasing the firing pin unless the trigger is fully depressed.
## Generations
- *First generation* - thumb groove-less frames, pebble finish on grip
- *Second generation* - cuts on the back strap, checkering on the front strap, back strap, and trigger guard
- *Third generation* - thumb grooves on frames, "Universal Glock rail" at the front of the frame, finger grooves on the front strap
- *Fourth generation* - "Gen4" - checkering replaces pebble finish on grip, larger and reversible magazine catch for left-handed use, dual recoil spring assembly
- *Fifth generation* - "Gen5" - removed finger grooves on grip, ambidextrous slide stop, flared magazine well, enlarged magazine floor plate
