*G36 Standard*
The *G36* is a German assault rifle developed as a replacement for the G3. It was adopted by the *Bundeswehr* in 1997 who designated it the *Gewehr 36*.
It fires from a closed rotating bolt through a *free-floating barrel* and cycles using a short-stroke gas operated system.
The G36 is *modular* and components can be easily interchanged with other parts from the G36 family or optional first-party components.
The fire selector and charging handle are *ambidextrous* and the bolt catch is within the trigger guard. The charging handle is centrally located under the carrying handle and employs a swivelling lever. A casing deflector located behind the ejection port makes the rifle more viable for left-handed use as well. The magazine catch is also ambidextrous and is an [[AK-47|AK]]-style paddle located under the magazine well.
The standard G36 comes with a *reflex sight* and a *3x magnified sight*. The reflex sight can be ambiently illuminated or battery powered.
Several components of the rifle are constructed from *fibre-reinforced polymer* to reduce weight. This was a point of contention throughout the 2010s when it was reported that the G36 would become severely inaccurate after overheating during prolonged firefights with sustained fire in Afghanistan.
The HK416A8 was selected by the Bundeswehr in 2021 to replace the G36.
