It, along with the P90 and the FN 5.7x28mm cartridge, was designed in response to NATO calling for a *replacement for the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge*. NATO specified that a shoulder-fired and a handheld weapon is to be developed and known as "personal defence weapons". The handheld weapon was required to *weigh less than 1 kg* and have a magazine capacity of *new fewer than 20 rounds*. The Five-seveN uses *lever-delayed blowback* and has a *concealed* [[Firearm#Hammer|hammer]]. The exterior of the pistol consists entirely of *polymer* which reduces weight and provides greater resistance to corrosion. It features the same grip angle as established pistols such as the [[M1911]] and the grip width is the same as in the [[Beretta 92]], then the U.S service pistol, despite the longer length of the 5.7x28mm cartridge. ## Variants - *Five-seveN* - no manual safety, double-action only, pebbled grip pattern, smooth accessory rail, no slide release - *Five-seveN Tactical* - single-action, ambidextrous manual safety, slide release - *Five-seveN IOM* - "Individual Officer Model" - same as Tactical variant, Picatinny rail, serrated slide and trigger guard, magazine safety, replaced by USG model - *Five-seveN USG* - "United States Government" - same as IOM variant, square trigger guard, checkered grip pattern, black finish with grey controls - *Five-seveN FDE* - "Flat Dark Earth" - same as USG variant, brown finish with black controls - *Five-seveN ODG* - "Olive Drab Green" - same as USG variant, olive drab finish with black controls - *Five-seveN MK2* - slide serrations added to the front, single-piece metal slide, black finish with black controls - *Five-seveN MK3 MRD* - FN patented sight interface, textured grip, overall squared design [^1]: Mass without magazine of a Five-seveN USG.
