The M4 is the fourth in the *Super 90* series of shotguns produced by Benelli and is the first to be gas operated. It utilises a new design termed the "Auto-Regulating Gas-Operated" or ARGO system which can be classified as a *short-stroke* piston action. The ARGO design allows for 2.75 inch and 3 inch shells with *different propellant loads* to be used without the need for adjustments. Low-power rounds can also be used but the action must be cycled manually. The M4 is *modular* and major assemblies such as the barrel, stock, and handguard can be interchanged without any additional tools. It also features a collapsible stock and an integral Picatinny rail. It remains in service in the U.S. military, designated the *M1014*.
