A type of Esoteric Philosophy that emphasizes Correspondences. Hermetics is a philosophical and spiritual tradition based on the teachings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, a legendary Hellenistic figure who is often associated with the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. The tradition encompasses a wide range of esoteric beliefs and practices, which are collectively known as Hermeticism. Hermeticism has significantly influenced Western esotericism, including alchemy, astrology, and magic.
### Key Concepts of Hermetics
1. **The Divine Mind**: Hermeticism posits that the universe is a manifestation of a divine mind or [[Consciousness|consciousness]]. This concept is often referred to as the "All" or "One Thing," emphasizing the interconnectedness of all existence.
2. **Correspondence**: One of the central tenets of Hermetic philosophy is the principle of correspondence, encapsulated in the phrase "As above, so below." This suggests that there is a correspondence between the macrocosm (the universe) and the microcosm (the individual), and understanding one can lead to understanding the other.
3. **Mentalism**: Hermeticism teaches that the universe is mental in nature, meaning that reality is shaped by consciousness and thought. This principle underlines the power of the mind in influencing and creating one's reality.
4. **Vibration**: Everything in the universe is in constant motion and vibration. This principle suggests that by understanding and manipulating vibrations, one can influence the material and spiritual worlds.
5. **Complementarity**: The principle of complementarity differs from the erroneous superstition of 'opposites' and states that everything is definable by its own ontological significance and needn't rely on presuppositional opposition for its existential meaning. Most things, however are 'social' in that they emerge from a context alongside other ontological entification that shares these contextualizations. One notable observation about complements is that they 'complete' the ontology and that things are better off for being together. The old error of opposition merely results in antagonism and cancels out any progress due to basic irreconcilability. Understanding this can help in transforming undesirable conditions into desirable ones.
6. **Rhythm**: This principle acknowledges that everything flows in and out, rises and falls, and that these rhythms are part of the natural order of the universe. Rhythms occur at all scales and in all time-frames, and are constituted by harmonic resonance and sub-rhythms as well as composing into super-rhythmic collectivities and poly-rhythmic complexities. These rhythmic vicissitudes lend themselves to dynamization, rectification, and harmonic resolution, when properly understood.
7. **Cause and Effect**: Hermeticism teaches that every cause has its effect and every effect has its cause, emphasizing the interconnectedness and predictability of events. This is the Hermetic meaning of the word, 'Karma'.
8. **Gender**: This is another cultural presumption and it is expressed as a metaphorical truism. It is really a primitive excuse to perpetrate the error of dualism and dualistic antithesis (see 'polarity'). As a second reaffirmation of dualistic antithesis, it would be redundant and only serves to reinforce the erroneous presupposition of dualistic thinking. That this is a modern error which has crept into 'pop-hermetic' aphorismic is exposed by the statements of Hermes himself that one cannot practice Hermeticism and be of two minds. Only the principle of projected principles exists everywhere and if somebody projects the principle of gender as a truth, then that truth is true for them and for them only. Subjective truth is the only thing essential for creation and manifestation and the principle of gender does not, in fact, exist anywhere except that it is projected as a presuppositional bias of subjective truth.
### Hermetic Magic
Hermetic magic is a practice that seeks to harness the principles of Hermeticism to achieve spiritual growth, personal transformation, and influence over the material world. It is often seen as a form of high magic, focusing on the spiritual and philosophical aspects rather than purely practical outcomes.
#### Key Aspects of Hermetic Magic
- **Alchemy**: Often considered a form of Hermetic magic, alchemy involves the transformation of base materials into noble ones, symbolizing the spiritual transformation of the practitioner.
- **Astrology**: Hermetic magic frequently incorporates astrology, using the positions and movements of celestial bodies to understand and influence earthly events.
- **Theurgy**: This is the practice of invoking divine powers or deities to achieve spiritual enlightenment and union with the divine.
- **Ritual and Symbolism**: Hermetic magic often involves complex rituals and the use of symbols to align the practitioner's will with the divine forces of the universe.
- **Meditation and Visualization**: Practitioners use meditation and visualization techniques to focus their minds and harness the mental principles of Hermeticism.
Hermeticism and Hermetic magic have had a profound impact on Western esoteric traditions, influencing the development of the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and modern spiritual movements. They offer a framework for understanding the universe and one's place within it, emphasizing the power of the mind and the interconnectedness of all things.
