# Prostatitis

**Prostatitis** is an acute inflammation of the [[prostate]], and it's the most common urologic diagnosis in prostate-havers under 50 years old (and the 3rd most common diagnosis over 50).
## Cause
There are a lot of factors that might cause prostatitis, but the most common cause is a bacterial [[infection]]. The most common source of the infection is a [[urinary tract infection]], and the most common culprits are:
- [[Escherichia coli|E. coli]]
- Klebsiella
- Enterococcus faecalis
- Staphylococcus aureus
Other causes of prostatitis are:
- [[benign prostatic hyperplasia]]
- urethral stricture
## Signs & Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of prostatitis are:
- fever
- dysuria
- perineal/prostatic pain
- severe lower [[urinary tract infection|UTI]] symptoms
## Treatment
Treatment for prostatitis consists of treating the underlying cause. The [[antibiotics|antibiotic]] given will depend on the culprit responsible. but [[antibiotics#Examples|Bactrim]] and [[antibiotics#Examples|Cipro]] are common.
## Nursing Considerations
Patient education can include:
- avoid foods with diuretic actions (like caffeine)
- avoid sexual arousal and intercourse during acute inflammation
