# Prokinetics --- **Prokinetics** are an [[nausea|antiemetic]] medicine that works by increasing gastric propulsion, or how fast the [[stomach]] moves. ## Mechanism of Action Blocks [[dopamine]] receptors and (when given in higher doses) also blocks serotonin receptors in [[nausea|chemoreceptor trigger zone]] of the CNS. Enhances the response to acetylcholine of tissue in upper GI tract causing *enhanced motility* and accelerated gastric emptying *without* stimulating gastric, biliary, or pancreatic secretions Increases lower esophageal sphincter tone ## Adverse Reactions - Drowsiness - Extrapyramidal reaction (whatever that is) - Restlessness - Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome - Pretty rarte # Examples - **Metoclopramide** (brand name: Reglan) is an anti-[[nausea]] medicine. - Indications - Treatment of post op and diabetic stasis & N/V - Prevent chemo-related N/VI 3) - Can help feeding tube move into small bowel - Off labeled use - stopping hiccups ___
