# Polysaccharide
---
**Polysaccharides** are [[carbohydrates]] that are made up of many monosaccharide [[polymer|monomers]].
They are particularly useful for energy storage, being able to pack in a high density of high-energy carbon bonds in a small area. Some examples of this are:
- [[starch]] which is found in plants
- [[glycogen]] which is found in animals
Another useful feature of polysaccharides is structural. This is often times so tough and dense that we humans are unable to digest them for nutrients (although it can be healthy as [[dietary fiber]]), but other organisms can. Some examples of this are:
- [[cellulose]] which is found in rigid parts of plants
- [[peptidoglycan]] which is found in the cell wall of bacteria
- **chitin** which is found in the hard bodies of insects.
