# Plasmodesmata --- **Plasmodesmata** (singluar: plasmodesma) are a type of [[cell junction]] that can be found in [[plants]]. Because of the presence of a [[cell wall]] in plants, there would be no way through it for cells to interact with on another. Plasmodesemata are gaps in the cell wall that allow the [[cytoplasm]] to move from one cell to the next. ## Structure There are two independed corridors, the symplast and the apoplast. ### Symplast The **symplast** is a continuous network of cytoplasm. Basically a porthole into the next cell. ### Apoplast The **apoplast** is the region outside the cell wall. It consists of the cell walls, the middle lamella and air spaces.
