# Plasmodesmata
---
**Plasmodesmata** (singluar: plasmodesma) are a type of [[cell junction]] that can be found in [[plants]]. Because of the presence of a [[cell wall]] in plants, there would be no way through it for cells to interact with on another. Plasmodesemata are gaps in the cell wall that allow the [[cytoplasm]] to move from one cell to the next.
## Structure
There are two independed corridors, the symplast and the apoplast.
### Symplast
The **symplast** is a continuous network of cytoplasm. Basically a porthole into the next cell.
### Apoplast
The **apoplast** is the region outside the cell wall. It consists of the cell walls, the middle lamella and air spaces. Basically rivlets on the outside of the cell, squeezed in the cell walls.
