# Ondansetron --- **Ondansetron** (brand name: **Zofran**) is a medicine to treat [[nausea]]. It is a selective serotonin receptor antagonist, which disrupts the nausea reflex in the brain. (the suffix -setron is short for serotonin) No extrapyramidal effects (spasms, muscle contractions, restless legs), can have some heart effects, some have allergies to other 5Ht3 antagonist drugs, large doses greater than 24mg prolonged QT interval, risk of cardiac arrhythmias •Common side effects:  HA, diarrhea, dizziness •Can give with dexamethasone (Decadron) for better results •more expensive than others that have more side effects • Prevention and treatment of N/ V, especially related to chemotherapy, radiation post-operative • Helpful if patients want to not have sedation and may be given in higher doses before chemotherapy agents • po, IV, 1M • Common side effects: **constipation**, headaches • I V push 2 mg over 30 sec., better 2-5 min. • IV push often 4 mg, but 30 min before chemo 0.15mg/kg (16 mg max) Rx only ONDA INJEC ___
