# Hyperphosphatemia
---
**Hyperphosphatemia** is a condition where there is too much [[phosphate]] in the blood.
## Causes
The causes of hyperphosphatemia are:
- an excessive dietary intake of phosphorus
- [[tumor lysis syndrome]]
- much of our phosphate is intracellular
- [[acute kidney injury]]/[[renal failure]]
- phosphate is normally cleared by the kidneys
- [[hypoparathyroidism]]
- which leads to [[hypocalcemia]], which has an *inverse* relationship with phophorus
- chemotherepy
## Signs & Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of hyperphosphatemia are very similar to those of [[hyponatremia]], which includes:
- soft tissue calcifications
- lungs, heart, kidneys, cornea, etc
- tetany
- all the other things too
## Treatment
Treatment for hyperphosphatemia consists of
- Phopshate binders
- sevelamer or calcium carbonate
- loop diuretics
- severe cases can be treated with dialysis
- stony deposits may need to be surgically removed
