# Glucagon
---
**Glucagon** is a [[hormone]] that is produced in the [[pancreas]] and is inversely correlated with a low presence of [[blood glucose]] and the hormone [[insulin]]. In other words when blood sugar is low, glucagon is high.
Some effects brought on by glucagon:
- stimulating liver cells to break down [[glycogen]] and ramp up [[gluconeogenesis]]
- stimulating adipose to start [[lipolysis]]
- stimulating the [[hypothalamus]] to make us feel [[hunger|hungry]].
Glucagon can be administered to patients with diabetes who are [[hypoglycemia|hypoglycemic]] if eating or drinking simple sugars isn't working well enough.
