what is crisis?
## Developmental Crisis
Like if there is someone who "failed" one of [[psychosocial theory|Erikson's]] "stage"
For example, if someone got to [[psychosocial theory#Generativity vs. Stagnation|generativity vs. stagnation]], but then just never "lived up" to that potential, and they're "stuck" in a previous life stage.
## Situational Crisis

- have they overcome big things before? Aka [[resilience]]

- Developmental level and maturity
- Concurrent stressors

## Crisis Intervention
You want to start with close-ended questions to start.
intervention strategy
1. assessment of lethality and mental status
2. establish rapport and client engagement
3. assessment: identify major problems
1. identify feelings
2. affirm personal strengths
3. provide information
4. planning: exploring alternative options an partial solutions
5. planning develop a realistic action plan
6. implementation: do the action plan
7. evaluation: develop a termination and follow up protocol
Plan should be meaningful and pretty short term
## De-escalation
We don't call this crisis management, because we don't want to get to crisis.
When you see/feel someone getting worked up.
Tone is everything. It's important to remain calm and approachable. Everyone can understand tone.
• "Please tell me what's bothering you"
• "l understand how frustrating this must be for you"
• "How can we correct this problem?"
• "I'm sorry this happened. Let's find a way to fix it."
• "Let me get someone who can help you with this problem"
"You seem upset...can you tell me what is bothering you"
It's a loop:
• Listen
• Validate
• Offer Choices (limits)
