Therapeutic class: antidiarrheal
Action: inhibits peristalsis, affects nerves to slow transit time.
PO, 2 mg initially, 1 mg every loose BM after, NTE 6 mg/24hr
Common side effects (SE): constipation & drowsiness
Nursing implications:
You don't want to give this is if they have infectious diarrhea, we want to get that uf
Offer oral hygiene or gum
No alcohol and allow rest time
## Bulk forming
• Psyllium
• Therapeutic class: laxative (can be used fir diarreah too)
• Soluble fiber that is not absorbed & makes gel to add bulk -
promote peristalsis and reduce transit time. In watery
diarrhea, can bulk up to solidify BM
• Therapeutic Effect: To relieve and prevent constipation
• PO- capsules, powder-need to take with at least 8 oz of thin
liquids
• Well tolerated**
