# SIADH
---
**SIADH** stands for **Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion**, and it's a condition where overproduce [[antidiuretic hormone]], which means the body retains way too much water by drastically reducing the formation of urine. This is bad for a couple reasons, but one is that it which puts you at risk for dilutional [[hyponatremia]].
## Causes
SIADH is often non-endocrine in origin, usually due to a [[brain]] or [[spinal cord]] condition affecting the pituitary gland. Sometimes it's caused by an ectopic production of ADH from malignant tumors or [[lungs|lung]] conditions. Some medications can also cause SIADH, such as vincristine and tricyclic [[antidepressants]].
## Signs & Symptoms
- decreased urine output and also *concentrated* urine with high specific gravity
- water retention
- [[hyponatremia|dilutional hyponatremia]]
- bounding pulse
- crackles in lungs
## Treatment
The goal of treatment for SIADH is to fix the underlying cause such as treating the cancer if it exists.
To treat the symptoms of SIADH you can:
- implement a fluid restriction
- give hypertonic saline
- to treat any dilutional hyponatremia
- [[diuretics|furosemide]]
