etymologically, automatic implies self-thinking/acting. In other words, there is an implied strong agency to the automatic thing. We use automatic in cases such as "automatic door" but the door is mechanically operated and responding to very limited stimuli and perhaps doesn't rise to "self thinking / doing". There is a case where automatic and automation have gone on to imply a limitation (all the way up to a complete absence) of required human interaction.
