## Meaning
In contemporary usage, the character "里" (lǐ) primarily signifies "inside" or "interior." It is often employed to denote the interior space or the inner part of something, contrasting with the concept of "外" (wài), which means "outside" or "exterior."
## History
The character "里" originally referred to the place where ancient residents lived. It's a compound ideogram, combining the elements for "field" (田) and "soil" (土). In ancient times, people relied on agriculture for sustenance, hence the importance of fields and soil. The upper part of the character represents crops, while the lower part represents land.
In villages, houses were clustered together, forming what was known as a "里" (lǐ). This character was depicted in the oracle bone script and bronze script as a depiction of houses within a village. Over time, "里" came to represent not just a village but also the inside or interior of something. Nowadays, it's commonly used to refer to the inside of a space, contrasting with the concept of "外" (wài), which means outside.
