## Meaning
## History
The character "尚" originally represented gas dispersing upwards from a window, indicating "upward" or "esteem."
In ancient times, it meant "to surpass" or "to exceed", and could also denote something "ancient" or "remote". It was further extended to mean "to esteem" or "to respect".
"尚" can also serve as an auxiliary word, indicating "still" or "yet".
In imperial administration, managing affairs for the emperor was also referred to as "尚", such as "尚食" (managing the emperor's diet) or "尚衣" (managing the emperor's clothing).
