[[Characters]] #Characters \ #Anatomy-and-Living \ #States-and-Conditions # 大 dà big, large ## Components [[一 (yī)]] [[一 yī]] [[人 (rén)]] [[人 rén]] ## Meaning In today's usage, the character "大" (dà) still carries the meaning of "big" or "large" in a literal sense, as well as "great" or "important". It also represents "major" or "significant" in various contexts. Additionally, "大" is often used to indicate seniority, importance, or respect, as in "大王" (dàwáng) meaning "great king". ## History In the oracle bone script, the character "大" looked much like a man standing upright. With balanced strokes, it demonstrated the strength and dignity of human beings, expressing the ancient hope of living well between heaven and earth. Therefore, the original meaning of this character, opposite to "小" (small), represents physical "size" or "greatness". Additionally, in oracle bone and bronze inscriptions, "太" and "泰" were often written as "大". "大" also extended to mean an expert or an adept. Only by mastering a skill can one become an expert and gain social recognition. ## Evolution ### Oracular Script ![[大oracular 1.svg]] ### Bronze Script ![[大 dà - Bronce.svg]] ### Seal Script ![[大 seal.svg]] ### Clerical Script ![[大 dà - Cle.svg]] ### Regular Script ![[大reg.svg]]
