# Speed and Scale
What’s the Plan?
Part One: Zero Out Emissions
1. Electrify Transportation
2. Decarbonise the Grid
3. Fix Food
4. Protect Nature
5. Clean Up Industry
6. Remove Carbon
Part Two: Accelerate the Transition
1. Win Politics and Policy
2. Turn Movements into Action
3. Innovate!
4. Invest!
Conclusion
# What’s the Plan?
No matter how groundbreaking a new technology may seem, make sure customers actually want it. — Eugene Kleiner
There is a time when panic is an appropriate response — Eugene Kleiner
A billion people worldwide could be climate refugees by 2050
Prices for Solar and Wind have plunged 90%
“Ideas are easy. Execution is Everything.” — Andy Gove
What’s a plan?
Franklin D Roosevelt’s WW2 Napkin Action Plan
3 Point plan stripped back to its bare bones:
- Hold 4 key territories
- Attack Japan
- Take France
Plan was *Focussed, Action-oriented, Definitive*
Leadership desperately needs *Clarity. *
Is the problem you’re trying to solve really more complicated than WW2?
What is Greenhouse Gas?
Sun radiates energy
Some is absorbed and radiated back into the air
Nitrogen and Oxygen slips back into space easily
“Greenhouse” gasses are loosely bound, more complex molecules that get trapped in our atmosphere and radiate back to earth.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is the most abundant.
Methane traps more heat, but doesn’t stick around nearly as long.
Nitrous Oxide, a by-product of fertilisers
All measured by “CO2e” — carbon dioxide equivalents
How much gas is there?
Pre-industrial: 283 CO2e per million
Today: 500 CO2e
59 gigantones annually
Need to get back to 430 CO2e
Why does this matter?
Current policies (Paris Climate Accord) lead us to 2.7–3.1 degrees C warming
To execute a big plan, you need clear and measurable goals.
“You say you got a real solution. We’d all love to see the plan.” — The Beatles
What’s the focussed, measurable, actionable plan?
OKRs
What and How.
Objectives are what you need to accomplish.
KRs are how you get the objectives done.
Typically they cascade down to more granular goals
Well-formed Objectives are
- Significant
- Action-oriented
- Durable
- Inspirational
Strong Key Results are
- Specific
- Measurable
- Aggressive
- Realistic
- Time-bound
What do we do?
Electrify Transportation
- Moving from petrol and diesel to electric transport
Decarbonise the Grid
- Replacing fossil fuels with zero-emissions power
Fix Food
- Restoring carbon-rich topsoil, adopting better fertilisation practices, motivating better decisions from consumers re: meat (especially beef)
Protect Nature
- Interventions and protections for forests, soil and oceans
Clean up Industry
- Lowering carbon, especially concrete and steel
Remove Carbon
- Clean up what carbon remains by storing with natural and engineered solutions
Politics
- China, India, Russia, EU (UK), US are all needed
- 2021 we’re only on track for 17% of total global emissions
It’s cheaper to save the earth than ruin it
