# The Microphone Exploded > **The claim:** It wasn't a gunshot at all — Kirk's microphone (or a device on him) exploded. **Verdict: FALSE.** ## What fuels it Low-quality video of a sudden, violent moment, plus a visible "bulge" on Kirk's shirt read as a hidden device. ## What the evidence shows (the primary record) - The **medical examiner certified the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the neck** — the official finding, quoted in the [[2025-09-17 - The Search Warrant Affidavit|search-warrant affidavit]] (Dr. Guajardo). A device is nowhere in it. The shirt "bulge" is the **microphone rig** Kirk wore. ## If the defense raised it > As an alternative theory, "it wasn't a gunshot" would go **directly to innocence** — no shooting means no shooter to convict.
