Blackout scenes in a sketch show are scenes that are written to end within 3 or less lines, and the lights will be blacked out quickly at the punchline, giving the actors an opportunity to set up for the next scene.
# How to write blackouts
Make blackouts done within 3 lines. Similar to the [[3 line scene]] exercise in improv. They'll most likely be 2 - 3 Person Scenes. A group blackout will still [[only have 2 perspectives on stage]].
When the lights come up, you'll need to set the entire context for the scene in the first line or two.
Punchlines in blackouts can be inappropriate, or [[Speaking Truth To Power|speak truth to power]] with [[satire]], or be a contextual reveal. The contextual reveal is the most common version of a blackout punchline.
Big Emotional reactions play well in punchlines. Audiences love to see large [[always have a true, honest, emotional goal when creating a character|honest]] reactions. Use [[Heightening]] to your advantage.
# Finding Sources for Blackouts
Think of moments from your day to day life.
Make a list of 5-7 of things in each category. Think about what the truth of those events are. What's true about this that nobody is saying? Or wants to say?
## Iconic moments / milestones in a personal life.
Funeral, make something funny. Moving into the punchline.
## Important World Events
What’s the truth about the situation? What’s the one thing we’d like to say? Build a context around the punchline.
