# Learner 学习 (xué xí) Domain: 🟩 Strategic Thinking ### Signature Theme Description You love to learn. The subject matter that interests you most will be determined by your other themes and experiences, but whatever the subject, you will always be drawn to the process of learning. The process, more than the content or the result, is especially exciting for you. You are energized by the steady and deliberate journey from ignorance to competence. The thrill of the first few facts, the early efforts to recite or practice what you have learned, the growing confidence of a skill mastered—this is the process that entices you. Your excitement leads you to engage in adult learning experiences—yoga or piano lessons or graduate classes. It enables you to thrive in dynamic work environments where you are asked to take on short project assignments and are expected to learn a lot about the new subject matter in a short period of time and then move on to the next one. This Learner theme does not necessarily mean that you seek to become the subject matter expert, or that you are striving for the respect that accompanies a professional or academic credential. The outcome of the learning is less significant than the “getting there.” ### Shared Theme Description People who are especially talented in the Learner theme have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. In particular, the process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them. ### Additional Notes Reward for Learner: Learner: learning the steps to create an outcome. It is the process of learning that is more stimulating more than the acquired skills, and using practice to work it out. Then they will want to teach the others. (source: 2) Process for Learner: (source: 2) 1. Understand 2. Learn 3. Apply - learner is not theoretical, needs to be hands on 4. Teach Intellectual satisfaction of knowing how to do something. Learner likes to develop models and framework Learner knows how to acquire a skill, Learner doesn't know how to analyze or gain insight into data, and that relies on other themes such as Strategic or Analytical (source: 2) 54. Look at the Executing and Influencing themes to figure out the action. (source: 2) Teaching a method doesn't mean can show you how they do it (source: 2) What drives them (source: 2): 1. Continuous Learning - important in the workplace where this is available. Put them in areas of change where things are consistently evolving. A bored learner is a dangerous learner at work. 2. Application of learning - but not for long as they will need to learn another topic. Go and research now this is done, and show us what you discovered on how this can be done. 3. Skills development - develop based on themes. Skills based on low talent is average. Skills based on high talent is genius. People have different preferences for learning. Not everyone can learn everything through YouTube (Kris). This is also reasons why there are many Strengths coaches, we all bring a different approaches to learning The Joy Of Learning (source: 3) - You are unintimidated by that feeling of not knowing something because you're driven by this constant and very real desire and a belief that you can move through confusion into understanding. (source: 3) - That not knowing is temporary and that you have the confidence in your own ability to solve a problem or to sort it out. (source: 3) On a team: - Learner are inquisitive and can help prevent groupthink but getting curious Learning is "neutral" and how you learn is influence heavily by the other themes My #4 Learner made a big shift when I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey... I went from "Just-In-Case" to "Just-In-Time" learning. As a result I've become more action-biased, where before I tend to get stuck in learning mode for longer than I'd like. It can be flighty, moving from one new subject to another. ***Mature*** Mature Learner dives in and masters, finding relevant subjects that can help themselves and others. ### Help and Hinder _**Helps**_ - You love to learn -- and you love to help others learn as well, which makes you a natural teacher. You individualize your approach so others can learn in the way that best suits them. - Your willingness to learn makes you open to change, and you learn all you can about the changes that will affect you and your team -- which makes you a great resource. - When others on your team are resistant to or fearful of change, you can break the information down for them and help them learn what they need to do to grow. - Your Learner talents may lead you to mastery of a particular subject area. Your expertise can help improve processes, troubleshoot problems or set a new, more productive course. _**Hinders**_ - Because the process of learning excites you sometimes more than the subject matter itself, you might wander off into areas that are irrelevant to your and your team's performance. - Just because you love to learn, and you see knowledge as its own benefit, don't assume that is true for others. Some desire to learn only enough to get the job done. - Depending on your other themes, you may prefer to learn alone and can get lost in your world of learning. Bring others along -- share your learning. - Having mastery of a particular subject area does not necessarily make you the only expert in the room. Ask for and value the opinions and ideas of others. (source: 4) #CS/Achiever🟪 and #CS/Learner🟩 **Achiever** likes effort and how hard is it to learn it? If it is then I want to learn it. As Achiever hates failure, a way to mitigate it is to create a Pilot project to see if it will work, without having it be treated as a failure. (source: 2) #CS/Learner🟩 and #CS/Achiever🟪 Both Learner and Achiever are two of the most likely themes to show up in someone's Top 5 This can be a very useful paring, because **Achiever** can give a practical application to that which **Learner** learns. • Individuals high in **Learner** enjoy learning information; those high in Achiever enjoy learning to get things done. • **Learner** values new information, new experiences, and enjoys getting homework done. Achiever values new items on the "to-do" list, being productive, and enjoys getting tasks completed. • For those high in **Achiever**, the value of a task is getting it completed; for those high in **Learner** the value of a task is what you learn while doing it. #CS/Learner🟩 and #CS/Focus🟪 **Learner** is a way of thinking; **Focus** is a way of executing. • Those with **Learner** in their top 5 are driven to pursue their interests; those with **Focus** in their Top 5 are driven to pursue their goals. As such, for Learner interests guide intention; for Focus intention guides interests. • **Focus** is characterized by single-mindedness, while **Learner** is characterized by variety of experiences. • Individuals strong in **Focus** talents will keep the team on track to persevere until the goal is reached; individuals strong in Learner **talents** will bring new information to the team that might change the route or even the goal itself. • When paired either together in an individual's Top 5 or as complementary partnerships of two people, Learner and Focus can be a powerful combination that results in mastery, determination, and achievement. (source: 5) ^333cab #CS/Learner🟩 and #CS/Ideation🟩 Both Learner and Ideation are Thinking themes, so ideas, concepts, theories, and knowledge are central to each theme. But there are significant differences to how all this thinking is done. • Those with dominant **Learner** talents tend to prefer a more systematic approach to acquiring new information -- taking a class, participating in a webinar, reading a textbook. **Ideation** can tend to be more random, less prescriptive, and less dependent on other sources -- be they teachers, books, articles, etc. • Both **Learner** and **Ideation** appreciate and need novelty, but for **Ideation** the novelty comes from within -- one's own creative thoughts -- while for **Learner** the novelty tends to come from with-out -- books, classes, experience, etc. • Those high in **Learner** can keep a team on the cutting edge of their field by learning and applying what is new; those high in **Ideation** can keep a team on the cutting edge of creativity and innovation by challenging status quo thinking. (source: 5) ^1cbbac #CS/Strategic🟩 and #CS/Learner🟩 I want to learn something quickly and efficiently. (source: 2) ^d5304a #CS/Ideation🟩 and #CS/Learner🟩 I'm exploring various topics so I can link disparate ideas to invent something new (source: myself) ^b18d3e #CS/Woo🟧 and #CS/Learner🟩 I want to learn how to be charming, and how do I get people eating out of my hand. "show me how do you do it?" (source: 2) ^7b9c1d #CS/Analytical🟩 and #CS/Learner🟩 Want to learn proven applications or concept, such as how to build a bridge. Loves math. (source: 2) ![[🟩 CS_Analytical#^c4d7d7]] #CS/Analytical🟩 and #CS/Learner🟩 **Learner** is going to understand the big idea based on the building blocks of what do I already know, and what do I have yet to understand? **Analytical** is going to break complexity down to simplicity, and focus on, What are the smallest provable elements of this idea? (source: 3) #CS/Intellection🟩 and #CS/Learner🟩 **Intellection** is going to seek that internal processing of thought and bring a different perspective. **Learner** is going to typically seek external advice or teaching and bring a confidence through that acquired understanding or that skill that they gain from outside of themselves ^8ce276 #CS/Learner🟩 and #CS/Responsibility🟪 If you have Learner and Responsibility in your top 10, your natural curiosity combined with your natural dependability make you an outstanding partner, both personally and in the workplace.
