# Significance 追求
Domain: 🟧 Influencing
### Signature Theme Description
You want to be very significant in the eyes of other people. In the truest sense of the word you want to be recognized. You want to be heard. You want to stand out. You want to be known. In particular, you want to be known and appreciated for the unique strengths you bring. You feel a need to be admired as credible, professional and successful. Likewise, you want to associate with others who are credible, professional and successful. And if they aren’t, you will push them to achieve until they are. Or you will move on. An independent spirit, you want your work to be a way of life rather than a job, and in that work you want to be given free rein, the leeway to do things your way. Your yearnings feel intense to you, and you honor those yearnings. And so your life is filled with goals, achievements or qualifications that you crave. Whatever your focus —and each person is distinct —your Significance theme will keep pulling you upward, away from the mediocre toward the exceptional. It is the theme that keeps you reaching.
### Shared Theme Description
People exceptionally talented in the Significance theme want to make a big impact. They are independent and prioritize projects based on how much influence they will have on their organization or people around them.
### Additional notes:
- Significance can sometimes be misunderstood as needing to be seen, where in fact it's the need for the positive impact to be seen rather than the person (bev_shipley) #quote
- Significance - It is not about the attention to myself, but rather, I want the thing I am working on to be recognized for its positive impact (Melissa Luon) #quote
- Note is that it's an influencing theme. That domain is all about moving others to action. A huge part of influencing is first understanding the *why*. This domain isn't motivated by checking things off a list per se, rather they want to know why something is important, why it matters, and why it is worth their time. When those things come together we see the magic happen.
With significance, for me it shows up as needing to understand intent and impact. How is this going to be used, why is this thing worth doing right now, how will this benefit people, etc. In relationships I LOVE helping people rediscover their own worth and I truly believe that the world NEEDS what only they can provide. I like making other people feel significant.
And you're spot on that significance wants to work on significant projects with significant people. It's the ultimate virtuous cycle - the better I am the more I can help you, and then you get better thus making me strive for even more greatness for us both. From Gallup Certified Strengths Coach Facebook group - search for "Significance"
• One of the best quotes I heard about it was from the Called to Coach theme Thursday about it sorting to Impact. It looks around and can SEE what is important and is drawn to do that work. Importance in this case is about what others deem as important (its an influencing strength so it is a little people dependent)
• I lead with Sig so a lot of this is personal. It is about doing work that have real meaning. I can recognize work that is important, people that are making an impact. I am also high Learner so for me that means that I tend to search out the best teachers, the best systems. I have always learned from the best. I recognize which opportunities are the most important. It also pairs really well with my Focus in that I am drawn to work that matters and my goals are often really important big goals.
• Sometimes I compare/contrast it to Maximizer. Maximizer looks for where you are good and how to get it to best. Sig looks at where things are and how a little bit of work can create the largest difference to where it can be.
• When I was an archery coach I was excellent at understanding which change at which time would help their score the most. I understood who needed what at what time, How to spend money to create the most positive impact for an individual or a team.
• It is all about what matters the most. (source: Nikki Haverstock)
- you think big, and you want your impact on the world to match. (source: 3)
- you're curious about how your message is being received and maybe even how they're interacting with you. (source: 3)
- It's likely that feedback matters to you; that it fuels your performance and inspires you to do even better work. Now, sometimes this feedback might need to be in the form of recognition. (source: 3)
- You're attracted to excellence; you notice it in others; and you like to surround yourself with the very best.(source: 3)
- Those with Significance in their Top 5 are concerned with the influence they have now and the legacy they will leave to future generations. Their Significance theme drives them to do important work, take on projects that will make a difference, to step to the front when others shrink back. Seeking to be credible, professional, and successful drive those with Significance to work hard and make an impact on the world. (source: 2)
- The Power and Edge of Significance: Those with Significance among their Signature Themes have an external pull that keeps them reaching and striving for excellence. When properly harnessed, this pull can lead the team to greater heights of achievement.
### Helps and Hinders
(source: 4)
_**Helps**_
- You want to make a difference. This drives you to make sure your work and your contributions count.
- You know what it feels like to do the work and then have someone else take the credit. You make sure this doesn't happen for your team -- you shine a light on their accomplishments.
- Your willingness to be in the public eye enables you to stand up and be recognized -- to take a stand when it matters and to be the voice for others who shy away from the spotlight.
- Your desire to be seen as significant in others' eyes can lead you to be a powerful mentor -- investing in others and making a difference.
_**Hinders**_
- Self-centered Significance can sound like this: "Look at me -- see how great I am!" Use your Significance talents to focus the best of who you are toward team success.
- Others can experience you as an egotistical braggart. Remember that if you are truly making a difference, you don't have to sing your own praises; your actions will do the singing for you.
- If it's all about you, your tunnel-vision will cause you to miss the important contributions of others. Ensuring that others feel significant is one of the surest ways to be truly significant.
- You like the spotlight, and that's OK. But don't dominate the limelight -- share it with others who have made a contribution.
### Raw vs Mature
Raw Significance is focused on independent impact.
Mature Significance asks, what are "we" doing and how can I bring people along with me to feel the important mission or goal.
Raw is intolerant: "I hate busy work." Mature is insightful: "I notice we're being ineffective, so I'm going to work on what has more potential."
There is ego in Significance: a boldness, courage and awareness in how you're being seen. It's a comfort in the spotlight. Raw Significance wants any spotlight. Mature Significance has comfort in the right spotlight, finding the places where they are best and being sharp there, instead of wanting the spotlight in every situation.
### Communication with Significance®
Celebrate their milestones. Recognition is important to them, but I think what's more important is the acknowledgment that their work is being absorbed and, and that other people are benefiting from it. So you can do that by celebrating milestones. They are going to matter to the people with **Significance**, (source: 3)
### With other Themes:
#CS/Significance🟧 and #CS/Maximizer🟧
**Maximizer** takes something good and turns it into something better. **Significance** focuses on something that's going to be seen as good and meaningful to others. So they're both sorting. They're both offering, (source: 3)
#CS/Significance🟧 and #CS/Belief🟪
**Belief** tends to say, "I am true to my values even when no one is watching;" **Significance** tends to say, "I will be true to my values because you never know when someone is watching."
• An important similarity between Belief and Significance is the desire to be involved in important, world-changing projects or initiatives -- whether it be at work or in volunteering.
• Individuals strong in **Belief** want to be involved in those big projects because they align with their values; those strong in **Significance** want to be involved in those big projects because they want to make a difference and leave a legacy.
#CS/Significance🟧 and #CS/Command🟧
Both Significance and Command can have a sense of presence about them; when individuals high in Significance and those high in Command enter a room, people take notice.
• **Command** wants to be in charge, **Significance** wants to be noticed.
• Those high in **Command** tend to exert control in situations that seem out of control; those high in **Significance** tend to gravitate toward an audience that will bring out their best.
• **Significance** is comfortable in the spotlight; **Command** is comfortable in the driver's seat.
• Those strong in **Command** talents will often use emotion to break the logjam; those strong in **Significance** talents will often stimulate positive emotions in others to garner support. ^d0aa15
#CS/Significance🟧 and #CS/Self-Assurance🟧
**Significance** and **Self-Assurance** are sometimes characterized as the two sides of the ego coin:
• **Significance** is the outward pull toward self-esteem, and **Self-Assurance** is the inward push toward self-esteem.
• Those with high **Self-Assurance** don't seek or necessarily want the positive reaction of others to their accomplishments; those with high **Significance** are driven to be successful because of the positive reaction of others to their accomplishments.
• There is a confidence that is associated with both themes; the confidence of those with high **Self-Assurance** is an inward motivation that drives decisions, while the confidence of those with high **Significance** comes from the enthusiastic response of others to what they have done. ^22c618
#CS/Significance🟧 and #CS/Competition🟧
• If **Significance** runs faster when there are fans in the stands cheering, **Competition** runs faster when there is someone running just as fast in the next lane.
• Both themes have an others component to them; those high in **Significance** perform in order to gain the feedback of others -- and thus improve performance, while those high in **Competition** measure themselves against others -- and thus improve performance.
• Those with strong **Competition** talents are acutely aware of their competition and strive to win; those with strong **Significance** talents are acutely aware of who may be watching and strive to be noticed -- especially by those who are significant to them. ^2def8a
