# Setting guitar intonation
Compare the open string (or harmonic) pitch to the 12th fret pitch. If the fretted note is flat, move the bridge saddle toward the neck, effectively shortening the string and raising the pitch of the 12th fret. If the fretted note is sharp, move the bridge saddle away from the neck, lengthening the string and lowering the pitch of the 12th fret. Use the mnemonic "flat forward, sharp back."[^1]
