# Using a MIDI controller to control FX parameters in Reaper
Make sure your device has continuous control (CC) signals input enabled. Go to Preference > Audio > MIDI Inputs and enable Control.[^1]
Click the FX parameter that you'd like to control. Click Param and choose learn. Move the fader or knob on your controller to have Reaper learn it.[^2] (Alternatively, to find your MIDI CC number, go to the midi editor window, right-click the ruler and select View > Mode: event list, which will then show you.)[^3] From the options in this window, you can also tell Reaper to only control the parameter via MIDI under certain conditions. "Soft takeover" changes MIDI CC only once it has crossed the original position.[^1]
You can use the action "FX: Set MIDI learn for last touched FX parameter" to create a shortcut to speed up the setup process and set the scope to Global.[^1] I have it set to Ctrl+\`.
To record automations with the MIDI controller, make sure the track's automation mode is set to "write."
Save the FX as an FX chain to save MIDI CC assignments to recall it later.[^2] In Reaper, to best [[Use a mixer as an instrument]] for my workflow, instead of [[Using a MIDI controller to control faders in Reaper]], just insert an FX plugin to control the volume of the track.
