# Programming realistic MIDI strings
Use the mod wheel (or another MIDI controller) to control the dynamics. Most string libraries have three dynamic layers. Use expression to apply the natural fade in and out that a real player would do. With short notes, you don't have to worry too much about expression and dynamics.[^1] Use a little drop in dynamics between each note to help connect them.[^2]
Using at least two MIDI CC layers adds realism. This can also help with rearticulating notes. For long sustained notes, even just micro automations help a lot.[^2]
Don't do much if any quantization.[^3]
