# ValhallaVintageVerb ## Tips and tricks Size controls the size of the room.[^1] Attack can be used to control perceived distance. It kinda has a similar sound as pre-delay.[^1] Low diffusion settings sound like delay.[^1] It has a modulation section for [[Pitch modulation on reverb]]. I really like its [[Chamber reverb]]. The Dirty modes are most faithful to vintage digital reverbs. They are inspired by the Lexicon 224XL and AMS RMX-16. These are great on synths.[^2] The smooth modes are modern, realistic updates of classic Lexicon algorithms. These are good for "expensive" sounding reverbs.[^2] The Chaotic modes are based off of work done on [[ValhallaDelay]].[^2] Chaotic Hall is close to Dirty Hall. Chaotic Chamber is close to the Smooth algorithms.[^3] Palace Mode is suitable for anytime you want to add a room sound.[^2] Use the Color settings to adjust how much artifacts you'd like.[^4] The filters are 6dB/oct and come after the reverb.[^4] ### Modes - **Concert Hall** - Based on '70s and '80s hall algorithms - Huge spatial image, lush chorus - Clean tone, without converter coloration - **Bright Hall** - Like Concert Hall, but with brighter initial sound and lusher chorus - Clean tone as well - **Plate** - Inspired by '80s late algorithms - Diffuse, bright onset, high density, lush chorus - Again, clean tone[^5] - MDN believes the EMT250 is based on a plate[^6] - **Room** - Emulates '80s room algorithms - Medium diffusion and early echo density - Darker sound - Clean tone - **Chamber** - Transparent and dense - Highly diffuse, high echo density - Less coloration than Plate and Room - Clean tone - **Random Space** - Deep and wide - Slow attack - High diffusion - Modulation uses internal delay randomization - **Chorus Space** - Deep and wide - Slow attack - High diffusion - Similar to Random Space, but chorused modulation - **Ambience** - Randomized early reflections - Balance between early and late reverb controlled by Attack knob - Good for adding air to drums, vocals, and anything where reverb should be felt, not heard - **Sanctuary** - Inspired by a classic German digital reverb from the 1970s - Discrete early reflections - Dense late reverb - Detuned modulation - Bit reduction and floating-point gain control used in early ADCs and DACs - **Dirty Hall** - Like Concert Hall but with more converter artifacts - Lusher and denser than Concert Hall - **Dirty Plate** - Like Dirty Hall, but applied to a plate algorithm - High density - Wide image - A slightly metallic sheen - Good on drums - **Smooth Plate** - The opposite of Dirty Plate - Smooth decay - Lush chorus - Not metallic - Most transparent and naturalistic - **Smooth Room** - Like Smooth Plate, but for rooms and halls - Little coloration - **Smooth Random** - Random room/hall algorithm - Transparent decays - Randomized delay modulation, like Random Space - Tight attack, smooth decay - Jack of all trades reverb algorithm - **Nonlin** - For gated, reverse, and nonlinear reverbs - Use Size to control the duration - Use Attack to interpolate between short reverb, gated decay, and reverse reverb - Lush, shoegazey chorus - **Chaotic Hall** - Like Concert Hall, but with tape echo saturation and artifacts - Lush and warm - Subtle wow and flutter chorusing - **Chaotic Chamber** - Smooth and chaotic - Tape saturation - "Dimensionless" - Adds depth - Wow and flutter modulation - Sounds good on almost anything - **Chaotic Neutral** - Chaotic modulation - Clean tone[^5] - Transparent sound, less metallic[^7] - **Cathedral** - Based on an algorithm for the Spin Semiconductor FV-1 chip[^8] - Long clear decay - Ensemble modulation - Realistic high freq decay - Great for synths, vocals,[^5] and acoustic instruments[^8] - **Palace** - Inspired by a classic 1980s room simulator algorithm - High density - Lush modulation - Spacious and open - Good for drum rooms, halls, and cathedrals[^5] - Can sound more realistic than other modes - Sounds good on everything[^9] - New QResque presets are based on the Quantec QRS, good for reverb that has some separation from its source[^10] - **Chamber1979** - Based on a chamber algorithm from a renowned 1970s digital reverb - **Hall1984** - Using the same techniques as Chamber1979 - Homage to a 1980s digital reverb[^10] ### Colors - **1970s** - Replicates the 10kHz bandwidth of earliest digital reverbs - Downsampled internally - Dark, noisy modulation with artifacts - **1980s** - Full bandwidth/sample rate - Dark, noisy modulation with different artifacts than 1970s - **Now** - Full bandwidth/sample rate - Clean modulation[^5] ### Presets #### Abbey Road Chamber 2 `<ValhallaVintageVerb pluginVersion="1.7.1" presetName="CC-A Road Chamber2" Mix="1" PreDelay="0" Decay="0.37556874752044677734" Size="0.5" Attack="0.69999998807907104492" BassMult="0.56595015525817871094" BassXover="0.38499999046325683594" HighShelf="0.4583333432674407959" HighFreq="0.28400000929832458496" EarlyDiffusion="1" LateDiffusion="1" ModRate="0.097000002861022949219" ModDepth="0.60399997234344482422" HighCut="0.34000000357627868652" LowCut="0.39597314596176147461" ColorMode="0.3333333432674407959" ReverbMode="0.6666666865348815918"/>`[^11] ## CPU ## Oversampling IR ## Sine sweep test at -18, spectrograph readings at -130dB, OS on ## Hammerstein test [^1]: [Fetching Title#824r](https://youtu.be/KaMg0_5bIho) [^2]: [Valhalla VintageVerb: The MODES - Valhalla DSP](https://valhalladsp.com/2023/02/10/valhallavintageverb-the-modes/) [^3]: [ValhallaVintageVerb 1.7.1 update released.
